President Museveni and his US counterpart Joe Biden have exchanged letters on the issue of Africa Growth and Opportunity Act otherwise known as AGOA.

The president according to a statement from State House, recently received a letter from President Biden about AGOA and he (Museveni) has now written back to him on the same in a special message he sent yesterday through US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp.

“H.E President Biden wrote to me about AGOA, so I have answered him. You will deliver the letter to him,” the Gen. Museveni said during a meeting he held with Amb.Popp at State House-Entebbe yesterday.

During this meeting, Museveni and Ambassador Popp discussed a wide range of topics including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) issue.

Ambassador Popp reiterated the US government’s commitment to continue cooperating with Uganda through improved bilateral relations.
He said US wants to continue conducting business with Uganda as a whole through different projects.

“These projects could be worked on without any restrictions,” he noted.
Recently, the US government named Uganda among four African countries that were set for expulsion from the list of the beneficiaries of AGOA over failure to observe human rights and failure to make headways in democratic rule.

The threat by US government came after Museveni stood his ground and signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Act something which left US leaders ranting claiming it was a violation of human rights. The Ugandan government on the other hand, has suffered negative publicity occasioned on it by opposition NUP which accuses it of alleged killing, abduction and or torture of its supporters. President Museveni however, recently wrote a strongly worded letter to security agencies warning them against using torture as a mechanism of obtaining information from suspects.
