President Museveni has described the late Archbishop Janani Luwum as a torch bearer to all Ugandans that stand out for the truth, liberty, peace, justice and patriotism.

Museveni says Archbishop Janani Luwum will forever be remembered and celebrated as one of the most influential leaders of his time not by just spiritual position, or words but more so by taking action and walking the talk.
The President made the remarks through the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at the commemoration of Janani Luwumu Day held in Kitgum district.
Janani Luwum was an Anglican 3rd Archbishop who was murdered on 16th February in 1977 during President Idi Amin’s regime.
Christians across the country and abroad gathered at Mucwini sub-county in Kitgum district at his burial ground to celebrate a martyr, hero and a saint who stood out to speak against the extra judicial killings that were happening at that time.
The government of Uganda gazzeted 16th February as a public holiday in honour of his great sacrifice for peace.
Museveni in his statement read by Nabbanja, described the late Archbishop as a torch bearer to all Ugandans that stand out for the truth, liberty, peace, justice and patriotism.
He said it was because of such killings that forced him together with others to fight against the dictatorial regimes.
The President therefore rallied all Ugandans to embrace the NRM vision of ensuring every Ugandan is self reliant.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Alfonse Owinyi Dollo also re -echoed the plea by the Bishops to unite Uganda as one.
The MInister of Ethics and Integrity informed the Clergy that President Museveni is committed to modernizing Janan Luwum memorial site as a religious tourism site.
