Makerere VC rallies students to support academic year to end this year

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof.  Barnabas Nawangwe has urged the students at Uganda’s premium university to rally behind management to ensure that the academic year 2020/2021 is completed within this academic year.

The VC made the call while updating students on the dates for resumption of studies at the Ivory Tower. He noted that following a clearance by the National Council for Higher EducatION (NCHE), studies will resume in a staggered manner in line with a cautious approach to abating the spared of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prof. Nawangwe noted that the university would open with medical students whose studies will resume on Monday August 16, 2021. Meanwhile, final year students will resume their last semester online on august 30, 2021 rest of continuing will resume exams on September 6th to 24th September.

The examinations will however be carried out using alternative assessment methods including online examinations, take home assignments among others. Each college has been tasked to identify and implement the most suitable examination mode following weeks of training of lecturers on the same.

He however beseeched students to bear with the tight schedule as it is intended to help them complete the 2020/2021 academic year in the 2021 calendar year.

Nawangwe’s call comes on the heels of a sharp divide between the Senate and the student guild leadership that was bent on calling for take home exams or waiting till students can do physical exams on campus. This was premised on fears that the internet and other technological challenges will make majority of students miss the online exams.
