By Juma Nsubuga

The management of Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) has issued an eviction notice to one of the local artists also it’s board member Phina Mugerwa a.k.a Masanyalaze accusing her of defaulting on rental fees.

Mugerwa who also doubles as the Secretary General of Uganda Musician Association, is said to have failed to pay Shs44m which she has accumulated since 2019.

The demand note dated 17th/April/2025 indicates that UNCC demand Mugerwa Shs44M for office space since 2019.

The note which has been seen by our inspector shows that Mugerwa has deliberately refused to pay the rental bills claiming she is a board member of UNCC.

The note further indicates that on 13th /May/ 2019 Mugerwa requested for an office space on rental basis at the National theatre premises but to their surprise, she has defaulted on payment.

The issued note also requests Mugerwa to pay the outstanding Bill of shs44M by 16th/May/2025.

“Please arrange to pay the outstanding rental bills by latest 16th/May/2025 or we shall be forced to evict you by law” the note says.

The panicky Mugerwa aka Masanyalaze reported the matter before the minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Betty Amongi Akena who also allegedly told her not to waste time but pay the dimes.

Mugerwa aka Masanyalaze used to be among the top musicians in the country in the 90’s was appointed to seat on the UNCC’s last year on 1st March by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development with fellow musicians Moses Ssali aka Bebe cool and Joseph Mayanja aka Chameleon among others.

We couldn’t get her side of the story by press time but we promise once she opens up.
