Court Rejects Agasirwe’s Bail Bid in Kagezi Murder Case

Kampala, Uganda — March 19, 2026 — The High Court Criminal Division has declined to grant bail to Senior Superintendent of Police Nickson Agasirwe, a key suspect in the 2015 assassination of senior prosecutor Joan Kagezi.

Presiding judge Isaac Muwata ruled that Agasirwe did not qualify for mandatory bail despite spending over 180 days on remand. The court found that the State had already satisfied constitutional requirements by filing an indictment and summary of evidence on December 16, 2025.

Justice Muwata emphasized that the 180-day rule is intended to safeguard suspects from indefinite detention without formal charges, but noted that in this case, the committal process had already progressed.

The judge further cited concerns over possible interference with witnesses, highlighting Agasirwe’s former senior position in the police force, which could give him influence over junior officers involved in the investigation.

The court also pointed to the gravity of the charges, ruling that the accused poses a potential flight risk if released.
Agasirwe’s arrest in May 2025 followed testimony from convicted accomplice Daniel Kisekka, who linked him to financing the murder plot. Kisekka is currently serving a 35-year sentence after admitting involvement in the killing.

Joan Kagezi was gunned down on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, a suburb of Kampala.
Other suspects in the case remain in custody pending trial.
