It was a busy day today for the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki as she joined the wanainchi alongside KCCA staff for a community clean up exercise in Nakawa Division.

The exercise which lasted hours, took place in Mbuya parish Kitoogo zone. The exercise also didn’t leave behind her deputy Benon Kigenyi, KCCA loudmouth Nuwabine and the acting Director Public Health and Environment Dr. Sarah Zalwango among others important leaders.

Hajati Buzeki whose leadership puts people’s interests first, commended KCCA teams and the community for the collaborative approach to achieving a cleaner City.

“We must work hard because these jobs we have were given to us to help the people of Kampala. Let’s ensure teamwork and selflessness in all that we do. That way, we shall achieve our aspirations of keeping Kampala safe for everyone to live and work in it” the Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said.

The locals commended her for her down to earth character and pledged to support KCCA’s efforts to maintain a clean environment in the city.

Several cleaning tools including rakes, forks, hoes, wheel barrows and spades were used to clean up various water channels. The KCCA trucks were also available to ferry every rubbish that was removed from the area, leaving it completely clean.

Buzeki also ensured that every drop of running water was able to flow smoothly. The exercise saw the ED and her teams alongside the community taking out garbage from the drainage channels and she urged the locals against pouring rubbish irresponsibly.

“I hope most of you have seen a video clip trending on social media platforms where a man loaded a truckful of garbage and dumped it in the drainage channel when it was raining. This was an act of laziness and insensitivity to people’s health and safety. We have laid down rules and regulations on management of rubbish. Why dump it in the channels? This leads to floods because the channels get blocked” she said.

The locals informed her that most of those who dump rubbish in channels do it when it’s raining.

“Those with sewage pipes they release them and those who dump rubbish also do it during that time because everyone is indoors. We thank you Madam ED and your team for coming to sensitize us on rubbish handling” the locals led by a one Hassan Mugambe told the Executive Director.

Buzeki asked them to be vigilant so as to spot out those who dirten the City.
