Reviewed! We Have NAM Mid-Review Conference! EC Chairperson Byabakama Explains Why MP, SIGs Nomination Dates Have Been Pushed Upwards!

By Barbara Nansimbi

The Electoral Commission has revised upwards the nomination of parliamentary aspirants including the Special Interest Groups [SIGs] who include workers, PWDs, Youth and Elderly persons.

According to the EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, the changes now stand at October 22nd to 23rd 2025, from the initial dates of October 15th-October 16 2025.

He says the nominations will take place at the respective offices of the District/City Returning Officer.

Byabakama explains that the changes were made to cater for Uganda’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement [NAM] Mid-Review Conference, an international engagement that will gather together Uganda government officials, MPs and Representatives from NAM countries and international agencies.

According to the plan, this NAM meeting is slated for October 15 and 16 2025, the same date the EC had initially scheduled its nominations for the legislature aspirants and SIGs.

“Key government institutions will be directly involved in planning, security and diplomatic coordination. In light of this, and to facilitate participation, administrative efficiency and national focus during this international event, the commission has adjusted [upwards] the nomination dates. The commission has further adjusted the period for the conduct of candidates’ campaigns for Presidential elections” he explained.

According to the new program, nomination of presidential candidates will take place on September 23 and 24, 2025, two days later on September 25 to September 27 will be harmonization of candidates’ campaign programs and September 29-January 12, 2026 campaigns for presidential candidates.

As for the MPs, their campaigns will begin from November 10-January 12, 2026, the same period those vying for Local Governments including SIGs will have.

The EC has set between January 12 and February 9th 2026 as the polling period for all those participating in the ongoing electoral process.

President Museveni was last year in January elected the chairman of NAM, and organization that brings together over 120 countries.
