Refugees! We’re Hosting Many Of Them But Support From Partners Is Minimal! PM Robinah Nabbanja Briefs IOM Director General!

By Juma Nsubuga

Uganda has been tipped to become the world’s Champion on matters related to migration by the International Organisation of Migration of the United Nations IOM.

The Director of the International Organisation for Migration of the United Nations Par Liljert made this revelation during a meeting with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries taking place in the city of Awaza in Turkmenistan.

Globally, Uganda stands out for being the most hospitable country in the world because of the good policies in hosting refugees currently totalling to about two million refugees.

This gesture has made Uganda more attractive to the United Nations who are considering to make Uganda a global champion on matters related migration.

Despite Uganda being hospitable to refugees especially from South Sudan and the DRC, Nabbanja however, informed her guest that the support from the development partners has since dwindled making it very difficult for Uganda to manage the refugee influx.

The Premier commended IOM for repatriating  Ugandan students who were stranded in Iran when a war broke out recently between Iran and Israel alongside America.

The UN also intends to enact a policy to reduce charges imposed on remittance but instead  allow governments impose a charge on remittances for charitable activities. Currently, Uganda receives about 1.5 billion US dollars annually from remittances.

In another development, Nabbanja also held talks with Deputy Chairman of Kyrgyz Republic also formerly part of the Soviet Union.

Edil Baisalov expressed interest in fostering bilateral relations between Uganda and his country.

Nabbanja also met Managing Director of the United Nations Technology Bank Deodat Maharaj who briefed her of the enormous opportunities Uganda stands to benefit  by supporting technological innovations in various sectors of the economy.
