Masaka police probe death of missing Senior Four student

Police in Masaka have launched investigations into the death of a 16-year-old Senior Four student whose body was found by the roadside after she went missing.

The deceased has been identified as Rayati Nassali Nakato, a student of Masaka Secondary School.
Nakato reportedly left her home in Nyendo Township at about 10am on Sunday, August 9, telling her family that she was going to Kako Village to pick up revision papers from a friend.

At about 4:30pm, she called her twin sister, Sharifah Babirye, and reportedly said she had travelled to Nabugabo Sand Beach.
Her phone was later switched off, leaving her family worried about her whereabouts.

The following evening, residents travelling along the Nyendo-Kako Road discovered the body of a teenage girl dumped by the roadside. The body was subsequently identified as Nakato.
Southern Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the death and said detectives had commenced investigations to establish what happened to the student.
Kasirye said police had found bruises around Nakato’s neck. Investigators are also examining allegations that she could have been sexually assaulted before she was killed.

Police are yet to disclose whether any suspect has been arrested in connection with the death.
Kasirye urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children’s movements, particularly when they are travelling to unfamiliar places.

Nakato’s body was taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem as investigations continue.
