Kyambogo Staff Strike After Varsity Bosses Divert Shs6bn Salaries Money

Non-teaching staff at Kyambogo University have vowed to stage a demonstration following a move by their bosses to deny them Shs6bn in salary enhancement funds.

Reliable sources at the Kampala-based public university told our Inspectors that to show their frustration, the staff will on Monday lay down their tools and spend the entire day holding a meeting in front of the University’s main building.

Genesis

Trouble for the university bosses was sparked off by an April 3, 2024 letter from the Ministry of Public Service in which a release of funds for harmonization of salary structures for public university staff for the FY 2024/25 was communicated to the relevant university bosses.

As per the letter signed by Kaima Godfrey on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, a total of Shs61,137,083,690 was released for all public university staff— with Kyambogo University particularly allocated shs6bn of this money.

The diversion

We have however learnt that whereas this money was clearly earmarked for enhancing salaries, the university bosses allegedly did not disburse it to the intended beneficiaries. They, rather, hatched a plan to redirect it to recruitment of more staff since Kyambogo has perennially been dogged by staff shortages.

It is this act which has since enraged the non-teaching staff, forcing them to resort to industrial action. Hence, in a July 12, 2024 letter, Jackson Betihama, the chairperson Public Universities Non-teaching Staff Executives Forum (PUNTSEF) highlighted this anomaly and hence summoned the affected staff for a remedial meeting on Monday.
