The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Tribunal sitting in Gulu has this morning awarded a total of Shs115m to different complainants as damages for violation of their Human Rights at Freedoms.

The Tribunal is being Chaired by UHRC Chairperson Adv. Mariam Wangadya backed up by Members of the Commission including Hon. Shifrah Lukwago, Hon. Simeo Nsubuga and Hon. Jacklet Atuhaire Rwabukurukuru.
According to the Tribunal, the violations were freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment and the right to life.
The tribunal decreed that the compensation will be incurred by the Uganda Prisons and the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces.
It should be recalled that UHRC recently made similar verdicts during it’s sittings in the Subregions of Tooro, Bunyoro and West Nile where a number of people with pending complaints finally had their rulings being made following tribunal hearings.
Wangadya reminded security agencies of their duty to safeguard the rights of the people. She lectured that the constitution of Uganda guarantees fundamental freedoms from torture or degrading treatment, in addition to other regional and international declarations on human and people’s rights to which Uganda is a member.
