Aviation Safety! Guard Against Poor Garbage Disposal To Avoid Bird Strikes! UCAA Conducts Wildlife Management Seminar Among Bugonga Community In Entebbe!

By Juma Nsubuga

UGANDA Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has conducted a Wildlife Management sensitization workshop with Bugonga community in Entebbe to guard against activities that threaten aviation safety.

The event was held at the Fisheries Training Institute in Entebbe Municipal Council.

Addressing residents at the official opening of the workshop, UCAA Manager Airport Operations, Christopher Omondi urged residents to guard against poor garbage disposal and farming methods within 13km of the airport environment. He said this is important to avoid bird strikes that may cause damage to aircraft engines.

Meanwhile, UCAA Principal Wildlife Manager Gloria Bitebekezi called upon  the community to adopt a four-way approach to wildlife management that includes the community approach, habitat management, grass cutting and controlled dumping of garbage within the flight path.

Bitebekezi noted that the airport wildlife management team had made progress in controlling bird strikes by use of frequent runway sweeps, use of laser beam bird repellants and bird distress calls, among other interventions.
