One arrested as police recover two heifers in Ndejje cattle theft operation

WAKISO — Police have arrested a suspect and recovered two heifers and a motor vehicle in an operation targeting an alleged cattle theft network in Ndejje, Wakiso District.

The operation was carried out on October 4, 2026, in Mirimu Zone, Ndejje Parish, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, following intelligence received by police about a vehicle allegedly being used to transport stolen cattle.

Officers from Katwe Police Division intercepted motor vehicle registration number UAM 175K and found four men allegedly offloading cattle.

Three of the men fled after noticing the police officers, but one suspect was arrested.
Police identified him as Kakumba Amos, a resident of Matugga.
The officers recovered two heifers and the vehicle and took them to Katwe Police Division for further examination as investigations continued.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said preliminary investigations suggest the suspects could be linked to a wider network involved in stealing cattle from different areas and transporting them to Ndejje for sale.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects may be part of a group involved in stealing cattle from different areas, including Hoima Road and Semuto, and selling them to buyers in the Ndejje area,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police are investigating the source of the recovered cattle and are expected to establish whether the animals were reported missing from the areas mentioned by the police spokesperson.
Detectives are also pursuing the three suspects who escaped during the operation.
According to Owoyesigyire, the investigation will focus on establishing the full extent of the alleged network and identifying other people who may be involved.

“Our officers are continuing with investigations and pursuing the suspects who are still at large so that we can establish the full extent of this network and bring those involved to justice,” he said.
Police have appealed to residents and cattle owners to provide information that could assist in tracing the suspects and identifying other stolen livestock.

Members of the public who have information about the whereabouts of the suspects or have recently lost cattle have been urged to report to police.
The arrested suspect remains in custody as investigations into the alleged cattle theft operation continue.
